I really appreciate finding great watercolors of good looking botanicals. The tulip below is a fine example of this style of painting. The artist is a fellow named Johann Bartholomaus Braun.
Found in an album of 190 watercolour illustrations, entitled ‘Flora Picta’ ca1660. Apparently this is part of a large study documenting the garden of the [...]

Here is a look at a backyard for a couple who does a lot of entertaining, and needs the appropriate space to do just that-entertain in a highly stylized way.

[Everything is new or different.]
The patio is extra large to accommodate a tent for larger more formal gatherings.
More on this job over the next week.
This black [...]

The other day I posted this surreal scene in colored pencils and ink. Here’s another; same style, I think this is a little more realistic and good practice for a “job-like” rendering.

[I use Berol PRISMACOLOR, and Derwent Studio colored pencils.]
Hey! what can I say. I like to draw goofy trees!

Pergola’s
I get a lot of questions about pergola’s, arbors and trellis’ . . . a lot. for good reason. Structure adds a lot to the designed landscape. With structure you bring order, refinement, extension of the house architecture, definition of space, etc. I would say these are good things
Plus; if done well they can look [...]

A week ago I wrote about the rendering below and how I’d hoped it would lead to a solution. A solution for the South side of a large terrace/patio.
So let’s do a little review
Let’s start with a look at that rendering. This was the 4th or 5th drawing of what I was looking for [...]

My great desire to become a better illustrator as a landscape designer has me always looking at other type of illustration and designed illustration. Here are a couple of examples of what I speak of. Cool stuff, to me anyway .

[ I think this is great stuff, the detail, the effort. ]
Here’s another one [...]

This started out as one of those deals where the client had no good idea of what they wanted; besides some patio space, some seating, and some fire. Typical client request on a residence of this size.
Now how all this goes together is completely up to me, and the layout for the space is wide [...]

In the previous post several objectives were mentioned for the next drawing of the(I’ll call it) plaza/pergola area:
This questioning and working through logistics led to me being asked if I could tweak this drawing some.

Could I show it with brick columns?
Could I show it with the overhead in white? Leading to what material could this [...]

3 stages of a drawing for a proposed residential water feature. It started with a photograph from the site and goes from there.

[red pencil, and light colors for stone and tree trunks]

[black line on stone, and color for supporting plants]

[sky(rough), final black lines, and labeling]
This is one half of a larger presentation given to [...]

[ 3buildings . . . 3 separate solutions. ]
The lower rendering is the one I had previously posted. the ones above flank this middle building. Left and right respectfully. The idea presented to me was “come up with 3 separate landscape-give each building it’s own identity.”
Being built at the same time, for the same function-upper [...]

[A marker rendering before any labeling]
New plantings, new surface, more pots, space for bench and pots, trees for background and shade. middle step removed(too small) and a much deeper ‘landing type’ step to be put in.
Pavers and something for the new walkway. The house looks a little Tudor style but is a ‘bastardized’ collection of [...]

[Rendering shows 4-5 different types of grasses for Apt. Building]
This is a drawing to be shown during the concept(s) meeting to give the client an idea of what could happen if they choose to go with this style(presented in drawing) . . . renderings like this are(in my mind) to suggest possibilities . . . [...]

A few examples of different stages of doodling to quick sketches for a job. Keep practicing, and keep drawing to sharpen the hand/eye co-ordination. Also to pick up speed, speed comes from practice and confidence.

For the cool price of $250,000 you can have this little beauty built for you in your own backyard. though for that much money you may want to put it in your front yard. Heck . . . it may be the house in the yard.
The photo comes from a story in Business Week, [...]
