Pergola’s
I get a lot of questions about pergola’s, arbors and trellis’ . . . a lot. for good reason. Structure adds a lot to the designed landscape. With structure you bring order, refinement, extension of the house architecture, definition of space, etc. I would say these are good things
Plus; if done well they can look [...]

The Original Rendering:
A few weeks back I posted about this drawing for a pergola design. The idea was to anchor a fire-pit seating area.
This drawing was to give the client an idea on how an anchor structure would look/hold down/define the back side of the area.
[ A simple rendering for fire pit. ]
This rendering was [...]

Here are two images of details from the previous post. The top rendering is a detail of the right side-people included. The bottom drawing shows the left side of the plaza/pergola:
[Simple people, and little detail on the plantings]
[Showing brick on the columns, and the bench relationships]
So what happened on this project. Well this idea came [...]

In the previous post several objectives were mentioned for the next drawing of the(I’ll call it) plaza/pergola area:
This questioning and working through logistics led to me being asked if I could tweak this drawing some.
Could I show it with brick columns?
Could I show it with the overhead in white? Leading to what material could this [...]

This is another pergola drawing for an area between 2 small apartment buildings. One unit holding 6 apartments, and the other 10. It was easy to see on the initial visit there was no place to gather.
There needs to be a place where these students could spend some time together outside . . . not [...]

These pics were taken a few days ago. I have been called back to this site because the homeowners wanted to add on a few more elements to the backyard
[Looking from the hot tub area to the main gathering space.]
This pergola is the one I discussed in the most visited post on the [...]

He didn’t like it. Not even a little. This was shot down faster than Ann Coulter would have been at a moveon(dot)org party. However there is a ray of hope for that big flat space. Ruins, yep ruins . . . . working on that drawing [...]

[This was 1st sketch for site]
I drew this before yesterday’s posted drawing. I like to work really rough, really fast trying to get a feel for how elements would play out in the given space. By the way; a drawing like this is not something I am doing to show a client-this drawing [...]

[This early conceptual is on trace over another conceptual with photo below]
A quick pencil study of a pergola this view is looking into the end. The goal here was to find something that was aesthetically pleasing and at the same time hold the space.
The space is 50×300 but we are looking at end [...]

This pergola was designed to guide visitors down a small, simple, straight walkway around to a small hidden seating area, and utility space. It was important that the pergola create some visual interest from afar because it sat at the end of a driveway.
What I would like to point out about this pergola is that [...]

Entertainment Entry
This pergola was designed with several thoughts in mind, several request asked, and the pergola needed to be substantial.
I had looked at the style and size of house and determined right away we needed something with some bulk, girth, and substance.
The homeowners are not fancy, quaint, do-dad type of people that need to look [...]

The Garden Entry
This concept drawing was to give the homeowner an idea concerning the changes to the upper terrace. Turn the space into a perennial and cutting garden. It is the only part of the yard getting full sun through mid-day and the afternoon.

Looking from the Other Direction
This drawing was done to show the homeowners how this would look from the other direction. This view shows the relationship between the new patio and the small retaining wall. The patio shown here really gives the viewer a better idea of its size for the new landscape.
I stayed with [...]

Never Built
This was a fairly quick rendering that I have pulled out of my archives. Its dated Fall, 2002. The drawing show the possibility of a gazebo that has a stream and falls wrapped around on a hillside.
I always thought the contractor of record did a poor job of selling this job and lost [...]

A couple of posts ago, I talked about this plan view conceptual vs. the other example posted. I discussed the pros and cons of each and added a few other thoughts. This was the one that was chosen for the project.
The client liked the possibility of students being able to interact between the [...]

This was the simple black line drawing before anything was done.
Rendering after adding some color pencil, decided to just fool around with pencils this morning, and not soak up any fumes from markers. I don’t really like to render in pencil only, I use pencils to enhance the marker work done for presentations. For [...]
