Hybridizers keep on hybridizing

posted, 10/09/06
A nice article from the Washington Post on the quest for the perfect plant. Including some of the newest varieties and a sneak peek at some of those varieties. The article links to several sites including the Novalis website, which is worth a visit.

By the way if you are looking for a certain plant through a wholesaler this is the web-site to check. It is a subscriber site, but they do keep an up to date list.

If you are looking for cutting edge on the retail market the on-line Nursery to check with is Tony Avent’s; Plant
Delights Nursery. Great information, good photo’s, and he’s funny!

Another great on-line site full of information on cutting edge plant material comes from another Southern plantsmen, Don Shadow. He’s another of one of those guys who has forgotten more than most of us will ever know. If you ever get a chance to hear Don speak you will not forget it. A great presentation, what knowledge.

Thanks for the links to the Post article, Rick. It must be incredibly hard to design plants that gardeners will crave since the process takes years from invention to production. The developers have to be both scientists and soothsayers!

Tony Avent sure does have a fun website, and the catalog covers are a riot. I started ordering from his nursery in the early nineties, and have a few of the old, small, plain catalogs in my files. Even in that limiting format he was pretty hilarious.

I really like Tony, he is a great advocate for the world of horticulture.

The plant hybridizers; of course, have their eye on the bottom line . . . . will this plant sell?
