Instant, Easy, No-names . . .

wci-chop-2.jpgI keep hearing about the decline of Gardening,and that the younger generation coming up has no interest, blah, blah, blah. Well all that talk may be right. There certainly seems to be a lot of empirical evidence out there to substantiate those claims. Here’s some more, a article from the Seattle Times pointing out more on the demise of gardening. Here’s a sample:

“This is a Swiffer yard,” laughs Matt, a 36-year-old bond broker.

“We didn’t want anything that’s going to require a lot of work but will look nice.”

This line is very telling also:

He says most of his friends are not into plants, but they appreciate
the yard’s green privacy, colorful flowers and ornamental grasses.

I must say that this line is the most telling for those that design for a living:

“They just love the casual lifestyle. They’re not buying furniture for
their dining room. They’re buying the outdoor grill, fire pit, the
comfy chairs to become the central focal point,” she says.

I am constantly noticing this in my design work, especially the higher up you go, it’s about the show, the style, the style is much more important than substance. And noooooo maintenance, it’s no about working in the garden, no way-no how.

Which is sad, but that’s the way it is.

The backyard patio area is the new family room, and you don’t spend the weekend working on the family room.
