The Request of the Stone: Fall 2008

Ohio toprock found on an hillside

I am going to be putting on a 3-day hands-on stone workshop October 20th-22nd.

Three days

The 1st two days will be about designing and building short retaining walls, not only functional walls but aesthetically pleasing walls.

The 3rd day will focus on small boulders in the 500lb-1,500lb range.

More to follow today including the release I am sending out and the web page devoted to the event. It will be a secondary page on this blog.

I’m sick of all those modular concrete block retaining walls and I have decided to fight back . . . . charge!

  1. Rick, I am loving the sound of your workshop and can’t wait to see more details. There’s nothing more pleasing to me than the “thunk” sound of a stone landing in the spot it’s meant to be.

Enough salivating over the works of folks like Dan Snow and Andy Goldsworthy. Time for me to learn!

Hope to see you there, nice of you to answer the questions I had in the e-mail.

  2. These stones look “newer” than “older”. I notice the great variation in size and shape. The moss is thin. How far was this from a road? Is it native stone? What do you think? I would like to have 20 to 30 yards to use.

I’m looking forward to seeing your photos and comments form your seminar.
